Chang’s work spans a variety of mediums, including works on paper, sculpture, installation, and performance, but each body of work is based upon a consistent methodology in which recognizable forms—from the vernacular to the historical—act as springboards for deeper investigations into these issues. His work has been exhibited at Ithaca College, Ortega y Gasset Projects (Brooklyn, NY), Bushel (Delhi, NY), Spool Mfg. (Johnson City, NY), Dartmouth College, the Torrance Art Museum, Museum of Jurassic Technology, LA Design Center, Woodbury University, and Virginia Commonwealth University, among others. He has also installed site-specific work on Governors Island, High Desert Test Sites (Wonder Valley, CA) and alongside a stream in South Windham, VT. He was formerly co-director of Monte Vista Projects in Los Angeles, and he was a contributor to the book Dispatches and Directions: On Artist-Run Organizations in Los Angeles and to the journal MATERIAL. Simultaneously, an enormous proportion of the current “good news” on climate change is about battery advances. The works in this series are inspired by the little ecosystems depicted in battery diagrams. Metals such as nickel, manganese, and cobalt are crucial to battery technology, and thus to climate action as a whole. But the ocean floor is a vibrant and ancient ecosystem that we know very little about. Some organisms living near hydrothermal vents may be almost as old as the Earth itself. What we already know about these organisms is that they are profoundly entangled with, connected to, and contingent upon their environment—as are we. An alliance of 24 countries oppose deep sea mining, but Norway has recently approved it. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is supposed to finalize regulations by 2025. All photography: Marc Newton Governors Island Residency https://frankchang.net/Governors-Island-Residency Sun, 19 Nov 2023 16:43:11 +0000 Frank Chang https://frankchang.net/Governors-Island-Residency Governors Island ResidencyAt Rest and In Motion was a collaborative residency project with Andrea Kastner investigating the fascinating history of Governors Island. The island’s stunning views—of NY Harbor, lower Manhattan, and the Statue of Liberty—were the starting point from which we explored its history and possible futures. Surveying and looking became a through line for our project, and we followed this trail through the island’s history—from cannon defense lines, to beachfront officers’ homes, the industrial sublime, and even ghost sightings. At the time of our residency, Governors Island was once again at a crossroads, as there was much speculation over the extent to which private capital would be allowed to develop the island (plans for the New York Climate Exchange had not been announced yet). So our installation incorporated both factual and speculative narratives and visual references from a number of sources, including artworks about Governors Island, site visits and building architecture, historical signage, biographies and other written accounts, and conversations with New Yorkers who grew up on the island. <img width="2994" height="2000" width_o="2994" height_o="2000"
